As much as I love Leicester City, I just can’t see them being serious title contenders this year. With Kante gone to Chelsea and Mahrez rumored to be on the way out, it’s hard to imagine them having the same success that they had last year. With that said, I really think that Manchester United will be a serious title contender this season, for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club.
A major reason for this is the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, one of the best-attacking players in the world. The way that Zlatan plays will be perfect for the English premier league. It’s amazing that this is his first stint in England at 34 years of age, but if anyone is the type of player that embraces new challenges it is Zlatan. The pairing of Zlatan up front with the youngsters Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will be very fun to watch.
The other big signing so far for the Red Devils during the offseason is coach Jose Mourinho. Although the signing came with a lot of skepticism, I think Mourinho is the perfect coach to get Man U out of their post-Ferguson slump. He is a man who preaches great discipline, and that’s exactly what will be needed for the team. They have the skill but what they have been lacking is the well-oiled team play that allowed a team like Leicester to win the league last year. Mourinho’s approach to the game will sure be beneficial and should produce more wins for the club that seasons past.
There have also been rumors of signing Paul Pogba, which if completed, would likely put Manchester United as favorites by all the betting houses. While I think Pogba would definitely add a lot to the team, I think they need to focus on getting a strong central defender. Much of Manchester United’s most recent successes were in large part due to the extremely strong center back pairing of Ferdinand and Vidic. If they had just one center back of the same caliber it would help them immensely in the title race.
