The soccer rumor mill really is great fun, especially around this time of year. There’s just something about the media in Europe that makes it seem like they just don’t care what they put out there. During transfer windows, you can type in the name of any top tier player along with the name of a top European team and there’s bound to be an article written about these two entities being brought together.
I remember last year when there were talks that Jose Mourinho was going to be on the move I googled:
“Jose Mourinho PSG”
“Jose Mourinho Man U”
“Jose Mourinho Barcelona”
“Jose Mourinho Man City”
etc.
etc.
And, as expected, all of them displayed results indicating that each one might be a possibility.
It’s really just entertaining to me, and I wonder if that’s the reason that they do it that way. It’s fun to think about and talk to friends about different possibilities of players moving to different teams and the media is great fuel for this discussions. I’m sure it also has to do with media outlets just taking a shot in the dark and hoping that they are right so they can claim they were the first ones to break the story.
Regardless of the reasoning, I hope this never changes, as it is always great entertainment for soccer fans who know not to take these rumors too seriously.
Cheers, European Media
