For some reason, I have never been a fan of a single English Premier League team. I just never felt a connection with any of them. I tried out several teams for a season or but it just never felt right. However, this season I tried something different. Myself and few buddies, who were in a similar situation as myself, decided to put the name of all 20 premiership sides in a hat and draw a team whom we would support for the rest of the season. I drew Leicester.
At the time, being a team with 5000/1 odds of winning the league, I was bummed, especially since my buddies drew Man City and Everton; two teams with a much better shot at a title and teams historically much more successful than the dismal Foxes of Leicester. But I was ready to honor our agreement and be a supporter
Leicester won a few games and were sitting at the top of the table early on. It’s not rare that a small club sits at the top of the table after only a few games, but the season being 38 games long always weeds out the pretenders within a month or so as the little guys can’t keep up the top tier level of play for a whole a season. At least that’s what EVERYONE thought.
Well, as we all know, Leicester won the league. I’ve never rooted and cheered for a team harder in my life. Although following the team for less than a season, I felt like a true fan. I got goosebumps more from Leicester City (including right now as I write this) than I think I have collectively in my entire life. The team was such a joy to watch and it’s a season that will never be forgotten.
The biggest takeaway: If Leicester City, a team with 5000/1 odds, could win the English Premier League, you can really do anything.
